1 large onion, halved and sliced
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup white wine or chicken broth
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 beef tenderloin steaks (1-1/2 to 2 inches thick and 8 ounces each)

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook onion in butter over medium heat for 15-20 minutes or until onion is golden brown, stirring frequently. Stir in wine and garlic. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 3-4 minutes or until liquid has evaporated., Meanwhile, combine the rosemary, salt and pepper; rub over steaks. Broil 4 in. from the heat for 7-9 minutes on each side or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 135°; medium, 140°; medium-well, 145°). Serve with caramelized onions.

5 tbsp red wine
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp light muscovado sugar
450g minute or sandwich steak , cut into strips
1 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion , thinly sliced
4 thick slices of bread (choose Dad's favourite, either white or brown)
50g garlic butter
watercress , to serve

Steps:

  • Mix the wine, soy sauce, mustard and sugar in a big bowl. Toss in the steak strips, season well with pepper and leave to sit and soak while you get everything else ready.
  • Pour the oil into a large frying pan and heat it up over a medium heat for a minute or so. Tip in the onion slices, turn the heat up to very high and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring often to get the onions really golden brown. Take the onions out and keep them warm.
  • Lift the steak strips out of the marinade with a slotted spoon and stir fry them in the onion pan over a very high heat for 30 seconds (do it in two batches if it's easier). Pour in the marinade from the bowl and boil for a few seconds until it sticks to the meat but is still juicy. Season with salt and pepper and keep warm.
  • Toast the bread and then spread with the garlic butter and cut each slice in half. Overlap two pieces of toast on each plate, top with a spoonful of onions, then the steak and more onions. Put a little pile of watercress on each plate and serve straightaway.

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 lb boneless beef top sirloin steak, trimmed of fat

1 tablespoon snipped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet melt butter over medium-low heat.
  • Add onions and garlic.
  • Cook, covered, for 13-15 minutes or until onions are tender.
  • Add brown sugar and salt.
  • Cook, uncovered, over medium-high heat 4-5 minutes or until onions are golden brown, stirring constantly.
  • Meanwhile, cut meat into 4 serving-size pieces.
  • Sprinkle pepper on both sides of each meat piece.
  • Place on the unheated rack of a boiler pan.
  • Broil 3 inches from the heat to desired doneness, turning once.
  • (Allow 10-12 minutes for medium rare.) Stir vinegar into onions.
  • Spoon onion mixture over steak.
  • Sprinkle with parsley.

2 boneless sirloin steaks (each about 1 pound and 1/2 inch thick)
1 large garlic clove, minced and mashed into a paste
5 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 3/4 pounds small red onions, halved lengthwise and cut into 1/3-inch-thick wedges (keeping root ends intact)
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Steps:

  • Place steaks on a large plate, and rub with garlic paste and 2 tablespoons oil, coating completely. Season generously with salt and pepper. Set aside to marinate 15 minutes at room temperature.
  • Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat until hot and just starting to smoke. Reduce heat to medium; add onions, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown, about 7 minutes. Add sugar, vinegar, and 2 tablespoons water; simmer, stirring occasionally, until onions are tender, about 3 minutes more. Transfer onions to a bowl, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Wipe skillet clean. Heat remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons oil in skillet over high heat until hot but not smoking. Cook steaks until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer to a cutting board, and let rest 5 minutes before slicing.

  • Preparation
  • Adding distilled vinegar, lemon juice, adobo, ground oregano, garlic puree, olive oil, sazon, tomato sauce and cilantro to a small bowl and combining.
  • Pouring marinade over cleaned thinly sliced Sirloin Steak, along with 1/2 of the onions, while reserving the other 1/2 and evenly distributing.
  • Using heavy duty skillet with about 2 Tbsps of oil while flame is on medium-high heat.
  • Adding thinly sliced steak to hot pan, without over crowding the pan.
  • Allowing the steak to brown on both sides.
  • FYI Sometimes when vinegar comes in contact with meat during cooking process you may see whats called scum, protein or fat, simply skim off the top using a spoon and discard.
  • Adding marinade and onion mixture to skillet and combining.
  • Adding about a cup of water at a time and covering with lid.
  • Periodically checking steak tenderness and adding water from time to time through out cooking process.
  • Adding reserved onions to steak during last 5-10 minutes of cooking.
  • Turning stovetop off when onions become soften and translucent.
  • Serve With White Rice, Rice And Beans, Beans, And Sweet Plantain.

This is my all-time favorite recipe for hamburger steak and onions. If I'm just cooking for me, I skip the gravy (they're very juicy without) and increase the onions because I like extra with every bite! Add the gravy to turn it into a wonderful smothered "steak". I found the recipe during a web search and tweaked it. Listed cooking time is for the steaks, onions and gravy.

1 lb ground chuck
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, plus an extra dash
1 cup halved thinly sliced onion
1 tablespoon oil
2 tablespoons self-rising flour
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon dry sherry (don't use cooking sherry)
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Mix together the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 patties, or as many as you want, depending on how large you want your "steaks".
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties and onions in the oil until patties are nicely browned, about 4 minutes per side, or until done if not making gravy. Remove the patties to paper towels.
  • If NOT MAKING GRAVY, continue cooking the onions until they turn golden brown and caramelize. Remove onions and serve atop hamburger "steaks". Stop here!
  • If MAKING GRAVY, sprinkle flour over the onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir, scraping up brown bits off the bottom as you go. Gradually add the beef broth and sherry.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer and stir over medium-low heat about 5 minutes, or until gravy thickens. Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper as needed.
  • Reduce heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover and simmer 15 minutes or until cooked through.

2/3 cup plain flour
1kg blade or casserole steak
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 brown onions, thinly sliced
400mls beef stock
250gms mushrooms, thickly sliced
Mashed potatoes, zucchini and beans, to serve

Steps:

  • 1. Combine 1/2 cup flour, and salt and pepper on a plate. Lightly coat each piece of steak in seasoned flour.
  • 2. Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook steak, in batches, for 3 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to an ovenproof dish.
  • 3. Preheat oven to 180°C. Add onions and mushrooms to the frying pan. Cook, stirring, for 4 minutes or until tender. Sprinkle remaining 2 tablespoons of flour over onions. Stir until well combined.
  • 4. Slowly add beef stock, stirring constantly. Bring mixture to the boil. Pour mixture over beef. Cover and bake for 2 hours or until steak is tender. Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, zucchini and green beans.

Add garlic; sauté until golden. Remove; set aside. Melt ⅓ more butter in the same skillet. Sauté the onions for 5 to 6 minutes. Remove; set aside. Heat remaining butter in the same large skillet. Sauté meat strips until browned; add the beef stock, onions, and garlic. Stir to dissolve browned bits in the bottom of the skillet. Simmer, uncovered, 10 to 15 minutes, until meat is tender and the mixture is thickened, stirring occasionally. Add tomato ketchup or paste, Worcestershire sauce and sour cream. Heat gently. Serve over egg noodles or rice. Sprinkle top with chives or parsley and a healthy dose of fresh ground black pepper, if desired. Notes: Always stir sour cream into a hot sauce or soup just before serving. Heat it gently and only until the mixture is warmed through. Allowing the mixture to boil may cause curdling. This easy weeknight steak dinner with onions and mushrooms takes about 15 minutes to make and is always a hit with my whole family.

1/2 lb thin sliced beef round or sirloin steaks
1/2 large onion (sliced into rings)
1/2 tsp olive oil
8 oz sliced mushrooms
4 olive oil spray
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Slice beef into thin strips. Season with salt, garlic powder and fresh pepper to taste.
  • Heat a large skillet over high heat. When the skillet is very hot, spray with cooking spray and add half of the beef.
  • Cook 1 minute, then turn steak and cook an additional 30 seconds.
  • Set aside in a large dish.
  • Spray the skillet again and when it gets hot add the remaining steak, cooking one minute, then turning and cooking 30 seconds more.
  • Add remaining steak to the dish.
  • Return skillet to heat and spray once again with cooking spray; add onions and season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook one minute, then turn and cook onions an additional 30 seconds or until onions are golden.
  • Lower heat to medium and add 1/2 tsp olive oil to the skillet, add mushrooms, salt and pepper and lightly spray the top of the mushrooms with oil.
  • Cook 1 1/2 minutes, then turn mushrooms and cook another minute and a half.
  • Add to dish with steak and onions and stir to combine.
  • Serve over rice.

2 bell peppers (not green), stemmed, seeded, and thinly sliced lengthwise
4 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (1 cup)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 500 degrees, with racks in upper and lower thirds. On a lightly floured surface, roll out 1 dough half into a 14-inch oval. Transfer dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush with 1 teaspoon oil. Repeat with remaining dough half. Bake until crusts are puffed and golden brown, about 14 minutes, piercing large air bubbles with a knife, if necessary, and rotating sheets halfway through.
  • Meanwhile, pat steak dry and season with salt and pepper. In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, heat 1 teaspoon oil over medium-high until almost smoking. Cook steak until medium-rare, 6 to 8 minutes, flipping once. Transfer to a cutting board, tent with foil, and let rest 10 minutes.

1 beef flank steak (1 lb.)
1 cup orange juice, divided
3/4 cup KRAFT Zesty Italian Dressing, divided
1 navel orange, peeled, sectioned and chopped
1/2 cup chopped cilantro

Steps:

  • Cut off all but 1 inch of the green top from each onion; discard. Place onions in large resealable plastic bag. Add steak and 1/2 cup each of the orange juice and dressing; seal bag. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight to marinate.
  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Remove steak and onions from marinade; discard bag and marinade. Grill steak and onions 15 min. or until steak is cooked to medium doneness (160°F) and onions are tender, turning occasionally. Meanwhile, combine remaining 1/4 cup dressing, 1/2 cup orange juice and the chopped orange in saucepan. Bring to boil on medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 2 min.   • In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 15 minutes. Transfer the onions to a bowl and set aside.

4 blade steaks (around 800g in total)
¼ cup plain flour
6 pearl onions (quartered)
3 cloves garlic (peeled & crushed)
500 ml beef stock
500 ml water
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp tomato paste
3 thyme spigs
salt & pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 125℃. Heat oil in a large dutch oven or casserole pot.
  • Cut steaks in half and coat in flour. Brown on both sides in the casserole pot or dutch oven, in batches to avoid overcrowding. Remover pot from heat.
  • Add remaining ingredients and stir thoroughly to combine. Cover with lid and place in the oven. Cook for 2½ hours.
  • Turn the heat up to 180℃ and remove lid. Cook for 1 hour. Remove bay leaf and thyme and serve with mashed potato and bread.
