This easy, old-fashioned lemonade, made with red and blue berries, is the ultimate summer drink and 4th of July treat.

1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. fresh lemon juice (from about 10 lemons), plus 2 lemons, sliced
Berries and fresh mint sprigs, for serving

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 1/2 cups water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the sugar dissolves, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and cool completely.
  • In a large pitcher, combine lemon juice, 1 1/2 cups sugar syrup, and 4 cups cold water (add remaining sugar syrup to adjust sweetness, if desired). Refrigerate until chilled.

Ah, the taste of summer. This classic lemonade recipe is the one my mom used to make for me when I was little. It's the perfect combination of sweet and tart! When using a clear pitcher, adding a few of the juiced lemon halves makes it look prettier.

6 lemons
1 cup white sugar
6 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Juice the lemons to make 1 cup of juice. To make your labor easier, FIRMLY roll the lemons between your hand and counter top before cutting in half and juicing.
  • In a gallon pitcher combine 1 cup lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, and 6 cups cold water. Stir. Adjust water to taste. Chill and serve over ice.

1-1/3 cups sugar
5 cups water, divided
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1-3/4 cups lemon juice (about 10 large lemons)

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine sugar, 1 cup water and lemon zest. Cook and stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice and remaining water; refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice.

1 cup water
Peel of 1 lemon, cut into strips
Juice of 6 lemons
Fresh mint sprigs and lemon slices, for garnish

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan bring sugar and water to a boil, add peel and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, bring to room temperature and strain out peel. To a 2 quart pitcher add lemon juice and 1/2 cup of the syrup and 5 cups water stir, taste, adjust ratio of water and syrup. Serve over ice garnished with a mint sprig.

2 lemons, zest of, grated
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 cups fresh lemon juice (about 12 lemons, with half of the rinds reserved and roughly chopped)
3 cups cold water

Steps:

  • To make the sugar syrup, in a medium saucepan combine the zest, sugar and water.
  • Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  • Remove from the heat, cover and let steep for 15 minutes.
  • Transfer the syrup to a 2-quart pitcher.
  • Let cool.
  • Add the lemon juice, chopped lemon rinds and cold water.
  • Stir well to combine.
  • Chill until very cold.
  • Serve over ice.

I love this lemonade and have just been waiting for warmer weather to share with everyone. You may want to adjust the amount of sugar to your liking as this is on the sweet side.

2 1/2 cups water
2 cups sugar
3 oranges
6 lemons
1/4 cup lightly packed fresh mint leaves
water
ice cube

Steps:

  • Heat the 2 1/2 c Water and sugar till the sugar dissolves.
  • Cool.
  • Grate 2 Tbsp of peel from the oranges.
  • Squeeze juice from the oranges and lemons.
  • Add juices and peel to cool syrup; pour over mint leaves if used.
  • Cover and steep for 1 hour.
  • Strain into jars; cover and refrigerate.
  • To serve, mix equal parts fruit syrup and water.
  • Serve over ice.
  • Garnish with fruit slices and mint leaves, if desired.

4 lemons
1/2 cup fresh lemon balm leaves
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup boiling water
2 1/2 cups water
ice (optional)
2 -3 fresh sprigs lemon balm, to decorate

Steps:

  • Scrub the lemons well. Peel the rind thinly, avoiding the white pithe, and set aside the lemons.
  • Place the lemon rind, lemon balm leaves, and the sugar into a small heat-proof pitcher. Pour the boiling water into the pitcher and stir well, crushing the lemon balm leaves to release their flavor. Leave mixture to infuse for about 15 minutes.
  • Now, cut the lemons in half and squeeze out the juice. Strain juice into a large glass pitcher, add a few fresh sprigs of lemon balm, and add the cooled, strained syrup. Top up with water or half-water half-ice, and chill until needed.

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1 lemon, zest of, finely grated
1 1/2 cups lemon juice
28 ice cubes
10 1/2 cups water
14 lemon slices
14 mint leaves, fresh (optional)

Steps:

  • Add sugar, water, and lemon peel to saucepan. While stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, bring mixture to boil for 5 minutes. remove saucepan from stove and let cool. Squeeze 1 1/2 cups lemon juice and add to the cooled sugar and water mixture.
  • Pour lemonade syrup into a jar and cover with lid. Syrup can be kept in refrigerator for 2-3 weeks.
  • If making the entire amount at once, in a pitcher combine the 10 1/2 cups water with all the lemonade syrup over the ice cubes and stir.
  • Place lemon slices as well.
  • **To make individual glasses**.
  • Place two ice cubes in bottom of glass. Pour 1/4 cup of lemonade syrup over ice cubes. Add 3/4 cup of cold water and stir. Place lemon slice on top and fresh mint if desired.
  • **For pink lemonade add 1.2 grenadine syrup to jar and shake**.

This recipe came from my ex-husbands great-grandmother. It is quite old and tastes great. My whole family absolutely loves it and it makes a LOT of concentrate! If you have troubles finding tartaric acid, I found it at a make your own wine store. The citric acid I find at a pharmacy.

1 ounce tartaric
1 ounce epsom salts
8 lemons, juice of
8 lemons, zest of, grated
5 lbs granulated sugar
3 pints boiling water

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together well.
  • Pour boiling water over mixture.
  • Stir shortly.
  • Let stand overnight.
  • Strain mixture and then bottle.
  • When you wish to drink it, add the concentrate to water to taste.
