- START WITH ONE PIECE OF FURNITURE. This would probably be surprising to a lot of you. When I started my master bedroom makeover, I knew I wanted to keep my big metal dresser I got from RH a few years ago.
- UPHOLSTERED BEDS ARE GOD’S GIFT TO INDECISION. I love and have both wooden and upholstered beds, but the easy thing about going with something fabric is if you’re thinking, “Is that too much wood?”
- INTRODUCE TWO-TONED PIECES. Bringing in a piece that is composed of multiple materials is an easy way to “cheat the system”. I’ll call this the “anchor piece” because I kind of consider my little sitting area side table to be the piece of furniture that brings the other furniture pieces together and bridges the gap of inconsistencies between the nightstands and dresser.
- LOOK TO THE HARDWARE. One of the reasons I chose these nightstands (HERE) was specifically because of the hardware. I wanted something lighter and white-washed in the body but the darker, steel hardware made it coordinate with the other pieces in the room.
- CONSIDER YOUR OVERSIZED LEANING MIRROR AS A PIECE OF FURNITURE. My oversized mirror was another piece I’ve had for a few years. Even though it isn’t technically furniture, treat it like it is.

- Limit Your Color Palette. The easiest way to ensure that your room will look coherent, even if it features a variety of styles, is to limit the color palette.
- Add Contemporary Art. If you're only dipping your toes in mixing furniture styles, one of the easiest ways to start is by adding contemporary art in a classic room—like in this Brooklyn brownstone by Jessica Helgerson—or vice versa.
- Pay Attention to Scale. One of the most valuable lessons in interior design is learning to play with the scale of objects. What does this mean, exactly? Scale refers to proportion and the comparative size of objects in a space.
- Use the Power of Repetition. Repetition works wonders in design. Even if your room mixes different styles, it will look more polished if similar patterns or items are repeated.
- Choose an Inspiration Piece. It always helps to start a room with one focus object and build from there. Take this room by Studio DB, for example. The curves of the coffee table are repeated in the curvy chairs, the rounded chandelier globes, even in the fish-scale pattern on the rug.
- Pick a Unique Theme. Another way to mix and match furniture styles with ease is to envision a theme. For instance, if you wanted to create a dramatic professor's library for a room with wood-paneled walls, you may start collecting objects that serve the theme: a green wingback chair, a tri-arm floor lamp, hammered brass baskets, and a French secretary desk.
- Balance Different Materials. The same way you should pay attention to scale, you should also look to balance the different materials in the room so as to not end up with a room full of mid-brown wood tones.
- Do Your Research. Finally, educate yourself. It's easy to throw furniture together, but a space starts to become really thoughtfully curated when you know the provenance of items and their meaning in design history.

- Start With One Piece. Already have a piece of furniture you love? It’s best start with that first piece and work from that. Especially if it’s an antique or a second hand piece.
- Match Pieces. Some things can match! If you’re just beginning to experiment with mixing up furniture styles then use this tip to start off with. The trick is not to try and match the bigger items together as the bigger items you see first and it will look too obvious.
- The Bed. The bed is the whole purpose for the bedroom so it should be the focal point. In other words it should stand out so try and avoid exactly matching the bed to any other piece in the room.
- Vary Furniture. Mix up the shape, styles and materials of some the furniture pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix round shapes with rectangular in the bedroom.
- Repetition. Repetition not matching. Find a shape, a finish, a colour, a texture that you can be found in a few of the pieces that you choose for your bedroom.
