This was from Prevention- March 1994. You can't go wrong with this flavorful dessert. With only 10% of calories from fat, this recipe is a lifesaver when your sweet-tooth is aching for a treat. I don't know what Zaar will come up with, but here are the stats from Prevention: Serves 8, 156 calories, 1.7 g.fat, 2.1 g.dietary fiber, 5 g. protein, 32.6 g.carbs, 2 g.cholesterol, 80mg.sodium.

4 cups apples (sliced)
1/2 lemon, juice and zest of
3 tablespoons honey
1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
3/4 cup egg substitute
1 cup low-fat granola cereal

Steps:

  • Coat 10 inch pie pan with no-stick spray.
  • In a large bowl, toss together apples, lemon rind, lemon juice and 1 T honey.
  • Spread in prepared dish.
  • In same bowl, whisk together yogurt, egg substitute, and remaining 2 T honey.
  • Pour over the apples.
  • Sprinkle w/the granola, leaving a 1-inch rim around the edge.
  • Bake at 350F for 50 to 60 minute or until puffed and golden. Serve warm.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch kosher salt
1 stick (8 tablespoons) salted butter, melted
Two 20-ounce cans apple pie filling
Vanilla ice cream or nondairy whipped topping, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • To make the topping, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, pecans, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Stir while drizzling in the melted butter, then set aside.
  • Pour the apple pie filling into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Spoon the topping evenly over the top.
  • Bake until golden and crisp, 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.

2/3 cup natural sugar-free yogurt
1 teaspoon arrowroot

Try this moreish apple crisp. 'Crisp' is the American version of a crumble, with the topping a mix between a nutty flapjack and a traditional British crumble.

100g plain flour
50g rolled oats
50g flaked almonds or chopped pecans
100g butter, cut into cubes
50g light muscovado sugar
½tsp ground cinnamon
vanilla ice cream or custard, to serve
8 Cox's or Russet apples, peeled, cored and sliced into 5mm-thick rounds
50g golden caster sugar
½ lemon, zested and juiced

Steps:

  • Put all the topping ingredients and a pinch of sea salt in a bowl and rub together with your fingers until combined into a crumb-like texture - this can also be done in a food processor. Chill until needed. Will keep chilled for up to two days.
  • Toss the apples with the sugar and lemon zest and juice until evenly coated, and tip into a 23cm round baking dish that's at least 5cm deep, or a 20cm square dish. Flatten down with your hand and scatter over the topping. Will keep covered and chilled for a day.
  • Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/ gas 5. Sit the crisp on a baking tray and bake for 40 mins until the topping is a deep golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges. Leave to cool for 10 mins, then serve with ice cream or custard.

6 small apples, peeled and cored (we use Macintosh)
sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
3 eggs
3 tablespoons flour
1 dash salt
3 tablespoons sugar
nutmeg (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350-degrees F.
  • Butter an 8 x 8 baking dish.
  • Roll apples in sugar until they are coated evenly. Place apples close together in prepared dish.
  • Using a blender (or use electric mixer) mix together the remaining ingredients (milk- almond extract) and pour over apples. Sprinkle with nutmeg, if desired.
  • Bake for 30- 40 minutes or until apples are tender. Custard will finish setting while apples are cooling.

1 1/2 cups low-fat milk

Steps:

  • Stir brown sugar and golden syrup together in a small saucepan over a low heat until blended. Add 1 cup milk and heat until hot but not boiling.
  • Blend remaining milk, egg and cornflour. Add to hot mixture, stirring constantly until thick and smooth.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Microwave: In a micro safe dish, heat sugar and golden syrup together on HIGH for 1 minute. Blend remaining ingredients, add to sugar, stirring well. Cook on HIGH for 4-5 minutes, until boiling and thickened, stirring once or twice.
