GLAZE:
2 sticks margarine
2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 cups apples, finely chopped
1 cup walnuts, chopped
2 to 3 tablespoons milk
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Cream 2 sticks margarine and 2 cups sugar. Add 2 large eggs. In a separate bowl, combine, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Add dry ingredients to the margarine mixture, mix in: apples, walnuts, and milk. Grease and flour a 9x13-inch pan Spread apple cake batter evenly in pan. Bake at 350°F. for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean. While cake is baking, combine all the glaze ingredients except the vanilla in a medium pan. Stir and cook to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour and spread glaze over hot cake as soon as the cake is removed from the oven. Let cake cool completely before serving. The longer it sits, the better it gets!

The crust is tender and flaky at the same time and the flavor is just the perfect amount of sweetness! 1/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup butter
2 cups flour
1/3 cup boiling water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
7 granny smith apples
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup sugar

Steps:

  • Crust: Mix shortening, 1/3 cup butter and flour.
  • Add boiling water, salt and baking powder.
  • Mix well.
  • Separate into 2 balls; place between 2 pieces of wax paper; roll.
  • Filling: Peel, core and slice apples.
  • Lightly mix cinnamon and sugar with the apples.
  • Heap into pastry lined pie pan and dot with 1 1/2 tablespoons butter.
  • Cover with topping crust; slit to allow steam to escape.
  • Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes then reduce temperature to 350° and continue baking 45-60 minutes.

1/2 c shortening
1/2 c sugar
1 egg well beaten
1/3 c molasses
1/2 c buttermilk
3 1/2 c all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 Tbsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1 Tbsp vanilla
1 lb dried apples

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2. Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten egg, molasses, buttermilk, and mix well. Sift flour, soda, salt, and ginger into a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center of dry ingredients and pour in creamed shortening mixture, stirring until well blended. Add vanilla, stir well, batter will be stiff. Roll out dough like you would for a piecrust.
  • 3. Cut to fit 9-inch pan or cast-iron skillet you should have enough to amke 7 layers. Bake 10-12 minutes. Cool layers completely.
  • 4. While the layers bake/cool. Put 1 pound apples in heavy pan and cover with cold water. You may need to add water several times to keep apples from sticking to pan. Cook until soft enough to mash. While still hot, mash apples and add 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cloves, and 1 teaspoon allspice.
  • 5. Alternate layers of cake with a thin layer of cooked apples. Spread remaining apples in a thin layer over top and sides of cake.
  • 6. Store covered in a cool dry place or in the fridge at least overnight. The longer it sits, the better it gets
