HOW TO SEW A PILLOW COVER FOR A 16 BY 16 INCH PILLOW FORM

Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
  • Start with finding or buying a 16 inch by 16 inch pillow form. Before you run out and buy one, be sure to check your closets or bedrooms for extra pillows lying around.
  • Cut a piece of fabric 16 inches by 16 inches. This will be the panel for the front of the pillow cover. You may ask: But what about seam allowance? Don’t I need my fabric bigger than my pillow form?
  • Cut two more pieces of fabric each measuring 16 inches by 11 inches. These two panels will form the back envelope section of the pillow cover.
  • On one long end of each back panel, fold over an approximate quarter of an inch. Iron the crease. This will create finished edges on the back of your pillow.
  • Stitch the little folds down from the above picture. I used about an eighth of an inch seam allowance.
  • Lay your large front panel face up on your table. Then lay one of your smaller back panels face down. Note that the hemmed edge is in the middle of the pillow cover.
  • Pin all the way around the perimeter of your fabric. They are kind of hard to see, but I have pins every three inches or so in the below picture.
  • Sew around the entire perimeter of your pillow cover with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. When you are sewing and come to a corner, stop sewing, leave your needle in the fabric, lift up your presser foot, rotate your fabric, and then keeping going again.
  • While your pillow cover is still wrong side out, snip off the corners to create a blunt corner. This will result in a sharper point when you flip your cover right side out.

HOW TO MAKE A COVER FOR A 16X16 PILLOW | EHOW

From ehow.com
  • Measure and Mark. Lay out your fabric on a work surface with the wrong side – the side that will be on the inside of the pillow cover when it is finished – facing down.
  • Cut the Fabric. Cut out the pieces of fabric using scissors. The square forms the front of the pillow cover, and the rectangles will overlap on the back of the pillow cover, forming an opening through which you insert the pillow form.
  • Fold and Press. Fold over one long edge of one of the rectangles 1/2 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Press the fold. Fold the edge 3/8 inch again, in the same direction.
  • Pin Along the Foldover. Looking at the wrong side of the fabric, you should now see a 3/8-inch fold-over of the right side of the fabric along one long edge.
  • Repeat and Sew. Repeat for the other rectangle of fabric. Sew along the edge of each fold-over using a sewing machine, taking out the pins as you go.
  • Pin the Trim. Lay the 17-inch square piece of fabric on the work surface. The right side of the fabric should be facing upward. Pin the trim all around the perimeter of the square.
  • Pin and Arrange. Pin one rectangle to the square. The right sides of the rectangle should face the right side of the square and the wrong side of the fabric should face you.
  • Line Up the Edges. Line up the raw edges of the rectangle and the square and pin carefully, keeping the trim inside the sandwich formed by the two pieces of fabric.
  • Finish the Envelope Pillow Cover. Sew all around the pillow, using your sewing machine. Use the sewing band of the trim as the seam allowance. Measure the sewing band, then set the presser foot of the sewing machine that same distance from the raw edges of the pillow.
