HOW TO FIX A CHIPPED BATHTUB - THIS OLD HOUSE
From thisoldhouse.com
- Match the tub’s color. The first step in fixing a chipped bathtub is to find a repair compound that matches the tub’s color. Bright white, off-white, black, and shades of almond and gray are standard.
- Clean up. For the repair compound to stick to the metal, the area must be completely free of soap residue, skin oils, and other contaminants. Use the degreaser and sponge to clean the exposed metal, then dry the area with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Mix the compound. For two-part compounds, open the lids of both parts and apply equal amounts of compound onto a scrap piece of cardboard. Mix the parts together with the mixing stick until the compound reaches an even color and consistency.
- Apply the compound. Based on the consistency of the mixed compound, choose a paintbrush or plastic knife to apply it. Apply a thin layer to the bare metal and avoid pooling.
- Allow first coat to dry. Allow the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once dry, apply another thin coat and continue to repeat the process.

- Clean the Tub. Bathtub surfaces collect a lot of oils from our skin and bath products, but these substances will prevent the repair compound from sticking to the tub.
- Mix the Compound. Following the manufacturer’s instructions on the label of your bathtub repair kit. Many kits come with a two-part compound. Mix the two parts of the compound in a small mixing bowl or even on a piece of scrap cardboard.
- Apply the Epoxy. Place painter’s tape around the chipped area to catch any dripping epoxy. Your repair kit may include an applicator, or you can use a wooden craft stick or a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of the compound over the chip.
- Sand It Down. For a seamless look, you’ll need to sand down the area to make it level with the rest of the tub. Use ultra-fine sandpaper to avoid scratching the tub’s surface, so choose a sandpaper grit that’s 2,000 or higher.
- Repeat as Needed. After you’ve filled in the chip, you may notice it still looks sunken in or uneven with the rest of the tub’s surface. Or, you may have other chips that need filling.
