MULLED WINE (GLüHWEIN)

Mulled Wine (Glühwein) image

Germans enjoy Glühwein or "Glow Wine" quite a bit around Christmas and New Year's Day. A favorite place to sip a warming glass is outside at the Christmas market. Unfortunately, the recipe did not say what size bottles of wine, so I've estimated that here. From "German Holiday Recipes from the German Embassy 2007" and the "additions" are my own from my experiences at the Christmas Markets in Berlin. Posted for ZWT6.

  • Put everything into pot, except for the oranges. If you are using the nutmeg, either grate a little bit into it (you will need to strain this out later if you are using). Carefully warm this up. You want to simmer but not boil (keep the alcohol!)
  • When ready to serve, put a slice of orange in a mug and pour over the wine. Be careful to leave the spices in the pot!
