Categories     Hawaii Recipes

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 box Wheat Chex
1 box Corn Chex
1 box Honeycomb cereal
1 bag (any size) Fritos
1 bag (any size) Bugles
1 bag (any size and shape) pretzels
1 cup butter
1/2 cup Karo Syrup (or honey)
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 bottle Nori Goma Furikake

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250F.
  • In two large pans, divide the Wheat (or Rice) Chex, Corn Chex, Honeycomb cereal, Bugles, Fritos, and Pretzels, evenly between the two pans. Set aside.
  • Now make the syrup. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add in the Karo Syrup (or honey), sugar, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. Stir to mix.
  • Pour the syrup over the two pans of chex mix, make sure to divide the syrup equally between the two pans. Using two big spoons/spatulas, toss the chex mix until all the pieces are evenly coated with the syrup.
  • Then pour in the whole bottle of Nori Goma Furikake, split between the two pans. Stir until the furikake is mixed evenly.
  • Bake at 250F for 1 hour. Take the pan out every 15 minutes to toss/mix to make sure it cooks evenly.
  • Remove from oven, let cool. Then divide up into bags/containers and share. Everyone loves Furikake Chex Mix!

FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Furikake Chex Mix image

I use 3 cups Rice Chex and 3 cups Corn Chex, but will submit as posted on Foodjimoto.com. It is ADDICTIVE! Please make sure you do not take it out of the oven too soon, it will be sticky and not crunchy. 1/5/12 here is a description of Furikake as suggested by Foodtvfan:" Furikake seasoning is like the salt and pepper of Japan. It is a table condiment made of roasted tan and black sesame seed, green nori flakes and pickle red shiso(beefsteak) leaves". Thanks Foodtvfan. In addition to this flavor, Furikake comes in multiple different flavors.

Time 2h15m

Yield 6 cups

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups Rice Chex
2 cups Corn Chex

1 (8 ounce) bag bag Bugles original flavor snacks
1 (8 ounce) bag pretzel goldfish crackers
1 (8 ounce) bag trader joe's macarona almonds

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 canola oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons hot sauce
1 2/3 ounces Nori Komi Furikake

Steps:

  • Cook butter, karo syrup, sugar and oil over medium heat.
  • Stir until sugar has dissolved.
  • Add soy sauce and worcestershire sauce, stir until combined.
  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Place all remaining ingredients in large roasting pan.
  • Pour sauce over cereal mixture and mix well.

STEVE'S OFTEN COPIED, NEVER DUPLICATED, FURIKAKE CHEX MIX

Steve's Often Copied, Never Duplicated, Furikake Chex Mix image

This is a sweet and spicy Asian variation of Chex mix. There are times I have made this by the bucketful, and it still runs out at parties. I often give this out as Christmas or hostess gifts. Be very careful. This party mix is HIGHLY addictive, very dangerous to keep around in big quantities and may result in some weight gain! This recipe is a combination of a few recipes, one from foodgeeks.com and another from beanpaste.blogspot.com. It also has a few of my own personal touches.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 2h5m

Yield 12 1 cup, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups Rice Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Wheat Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups Corn Chex or 2 cups Crispix cereal
2 cups honeycomb cereal (optional)
2 cups pretzel sticks (I use Rold Gold brand)
2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
3 tablespoons soy sauce (I use Kikkoman. Hawaii people, DO NOT USE Aloha Brand for this!!!)
1/2 cup oil
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1 (2 ounce) bottle Nori Goma Furikake (I prefer Nori Komi Furikake, but it wouldn't let me input Nori Komi Furikake, Mishima brand)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • Mix together all the cereals, pretzels, and peanuts in a large baking pan (The tin foil ones that you can buy from the store to roast turkey works really well!).
  • Divide the mixture between two pans.
  • In a medium-sized sauce pan over medium to medium-high heat, melt butter.
  • Add sugar and dissolve well.
  • Add corn syrup, soy sauce, oil, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco Sauce. Stir until blended well. It works best if you heat till it reaches the hard ball stage (about 250 degrees).
  • Pour over cereal mixture, one pan at a time, and mix well.
  • Put into the oven.
  • After 15 minutes, remove from oven, and add one bottle of furikake to each pan. Mix around to evenly distribute furikake and sauce from the bottom.
  • Continue baking for about 1-2 hours, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • The cooking time fluauates depending on how crispy you want it, and how humid it is (making this in 90% humidity is a nightmare!).
  • Store in an air-tight container or ziplock bags.

BROWNED BUTTER FURIKAKE CHEX MIX - HEALTHY NIBBLES
After making about 20 batches of the furikake chex mix, I’ve perfected a healthier recipe that doesn’t compromise on flavor. Most recipes I’ve seen online call for 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of oil, 1 cup of sweetener (usually corn syrup) and about 1 cup of furikake for the same amount of dry ingredients that I’m using here.

FURIKAKE CHEX SNACK MIX - AMY'S DELICIOUS DISCOVERIES
When the syrup has coated all the chex cereal, sprinkle furikake and mix. (Best to use a deep large bowl for this so that the syrup coats the chex cereal. Use of a shallow bowl or done directly in the baking tray leads to most of the syrup sticking to the bottom of the bowl/or tray instead of the cereal.) 3. Pour out onto a large baking tray and spread out into a thin layer. …
