Add a touch of summer to a classic tipple with this delicious elderflower-infused gin. Great for a summer gathering, served with tonic water and lots of ice

6-8 freshly picked elderflower heads
1 strip lemon peel
1 tbsp golden caster sugar
500ml gin

Steps:

  • Shake any obvious bugs off the elderflower heads then put them into a large jar or jug. Add the lemon peel, caster sugar and pour over the gin. Cover and leave to infuse for 24hrs.
  • Strain through coffee filter paper or 2 sheets of kitchen paper into a clean bottle. Keeps for up to 1 month. Serve with tonic water, lots of ice and a dash of sugar syrup if you like.

GIN AND ELDERFLOWER MARTINI



Gin and Elderflower Martini image

Fresh lemon syrup and elderflower liqueur compliment the gin in this refreshing cocktail. A garnish of lemon zest creates a fragrant finish.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 lemon
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups gin
3/4 cup elderflower liqueur, such as St. Germain
1 1/2 cups ice

Steps:

  • Remove 8 thin strips of zest from the lemon using a vegetable peeler and set aside. Thinly slice the lemon into rounds and put into a small saucepan along with the sugar and 1/3 cup water. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Let cool at room temperature and strain.
  • Rub a strip of zest around the rim of 8 martini glasses, and then drop into the bottom of each glass for garnish. Combine the gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon syrup and ice in a measuring cup or pitcher and stir until very cold. Strain into the prepared glasses.

Try this twist on a French 75 using wine and elderflower. It's a wonderful cocktail for toasting a special event, or just to sip on warm summer days

25ml lemon juice
1 tbsp (15ml) elderflower cordial
50ml gin
25ml elderflower liqueur (or add another 25ml gin)
ice
75ml chilled sparkling wine
sprig of lemon thyme or a mint leaf

Steps:

  • Pour the lemon juice, elderflower cordial, gin and elderflower liqueur (if using) into a cocktail shaker. Add a large handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels icy cold.
  • Strain the cocktail into two champagne flutes or coupes, then top up slowly with sparkling wine. Garnish each one with a small sprig of lemon thyme or a mint leaf.
