6 SIGNS OF A BAD CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER AND REPLACEMENT …

- Low Clutch Fluid. No, we’re not yanking your chain; clutch fluid is a real thing. And if you’re looking in the clutch fluid reservoir, the fluid should always be at the same height.
- Soft or Spongy Clutch Pedal. Your clutch fluid is like your brake fluid in the fact that if it feels spongy or soft, you have water or air in the system.
- Your Clutch Engages at a Different Point. If your clutch fluid has dropped dramatically, then it’s likely that your clutch is going to engage at a different point too.
- Dark Clutch Fluid After Changing It. Clutch fluid will wear out and break down, so if you have a vehicle with over 100,000 or 200,000 miles and notice that the clutch fluid is a little dark, this is entirely normal.
- It’s Hard to Depress The Clutch. The entire purpose of the clutch master cylinder is to help you disengage the clutch. So, it makes sense that if your master clutch cylinder is leaking, it will get harder to depress the clutch.
- The Clutch Pedal Is Stuck to the Floor. If you find that your clutch pedal is stuck to the floor, you’ve lost the hydraulics in your clutch system. The most likely cause is a massive leak in your clutch master cylinder.
7 SYMPTOMS OF A BAD BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER (AND REPLACEMENT COST)

- Warning Light. The first symptom that is the easiest to notice is when the Brake Warning Light illuminates on the dashboard. This indicates that there is some kind of problem with the braking system, but it might not necessarily mean that the brake master cylinder is at fault.
- Brake Fluid Leak. The brake master cylinder needs a certain level of brake fluid to create the hydraulic pressure necessary for slowing down the vehicle.
- Spongy Brake Pedal. When the brake pedal starts to feel spongy as you place pressure on it with your foot, this will automatically be a sign that your brake master cylinder may be having issues.
- Contaminated Brake Fluid. Another problem that could happen as a result of worn out rubber seals is contamination in the brake fluid. The seals not only help keep the brake fluid from coming out, they also prevent dirt and debris from mixing with the brake fluid.
- Sinking Brake Pedal. Following all these other symptoms, you will start noticing the brake pedal not returning to the top after you’ve removed your foot from it.
- Bad Brake Bias. Brake master cylinders often contain two separate circuits that separate brake fluid to the wheels in pairs. This is to prevent a total loss of braking if there were to be a leak in one side of the system.
- Uneven Brake Pad Wear. Caused by a failed circuit, if only two out of four wheels are able to apply the brakes, you will notice uneven pad wear. For instance, the front right side and the rear left side would be worn down more than the front left and rear right.
