CORRUGATED BOARD GRADES EXPLAINED: TYPES OF CARDBOARD
From gwp.co.uk
- Composition of Material. How is corrugated material formed? Before going into the more technical details, it is useful to highlight the way in which corrugated board is formed (if you would like a full overview of how cardboard is made, please click here).
- Types of Paper. Material used in the manufacture of cardboard. One of the key factors that define the properties of the corrugated material is the types of paper used.
- Paper Weights & GSM. Variances between papers used. Once you understand the types of paper available and commonly used, it is also important to consider the weights of paper.
- Wall Types. Construction of corrugated cardboard material. Besides the varying paper weights and types, the type (and number) of fluting must also be considered.
- Flutes. Explanation of corrugated flutes. The final aspect of the corrugated board that can affect its performance (and weight and cost), is the flute type.
- Board Grade Naming. Corrugated board descriptions / explanation. All of this information allows you to create an abbreviation that describes the type of board being used.
- Applications. Individual flute uses / info. Simply knowing how a corrugated board grade is manufactured, and its’ component parts, doesn’t necessarily allow you to make an informed choice on the type of material you should be using for your packaging.
- Weights. Flute type weight tables. As it is possible to vary a number of parameters when specifying the board type for packaging – such as paper weights, flute types and number of walls, it is actually possible to achieve similar performance with different board grades.
- Terminology. Technical terms associated with corrugated board grades. As a final point of reference / explanation, below is a common list of terms relating to board grades and corrugated material in general.

- Corrugated fiberboard. Corrugated fiberboard is the most common type of cardboard and is characterized by its flute profiles. It is made from three different elements
- Single-face board. Single-face-board looks like corrugated fiberboard, except it doesn’t have the second section on the other side of the flute layers. This type of packing is often used to segregate items in a single box so that they don’t get broken during transit.
- Single-wall board. This type of packing is a typical corrugated cardboard and features paperboard on both sides of the fluting to guarantee protection against impact that aren’t too delicate.
- Double-wall board. The double-wall board adds an extra layer of fluting in between the two outermost layers. This type of packing offers extra protection for whatever goods are stored inside and are more resistant to bending.
- Triple-wall board. The triple-wall board are very strong boxes and is ideal for heavy objects like automotive parts or major appliances. This cardboard contains 3 layers of fluting in between the two outside walls.
- Honeycomb cardboard. Honeycomb cardboard is a less commonly used type of cardboard packing. It consists of several layers of corrugation, which make up the length of the piece.
- Paperboard. Paperboard is an extremely thin form of cardboard that is utilized for toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes. Thus, it is also known by the name chipboard or carton and is less durable than corrugated fiberboard.
- Grey paperboard and grey cardboard. Both types are made of recycled paper materials. Grey paperboard is used for packaging purposes and grey cardboard can be found in different industries, including bookbinding and packaging products.
- Matboard. Matboard is a heavy paper-based material and can be found in picture frames to protect artwork or photography. It comes in several different types of matboard such as a standard matboard, black core, white core and color core matboard, and conservation board.
