  • Choose The Right Strain. Even if you’re a complete newb, you know you’re going to feel a little different after cooking with cannabis — that’s why you’re doing it, right?
  • Pay Attention To Cannabinoid Content. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact with specific cannabinoid receptors in your brain (i.e., CB1 and CB2).
  • Realize What You’re In For. Cooking with cannabis is dramatically different than smoking the very same strain. One of the biggest differences between ingesting and inhaling your weed is the duration of the resulting experience.
  • Don’t Use Raw Weed. Raw weed straight from the plant is non-psychoactive. In its raw form, it’s just another vegetable like spinach or kale (albeit one that doesn’t taste good and can cause vomiting).
  • Always Decarb Your Weed. To unlock the full potential of your weed when cooking with cannabis, you need to decarboxylate. Don’t be scared of that five-syllable monstrosity of a word — it’s actually the cannaenthusiast’s friend.

  • Use High-Quality Flower. Different cultivars of cannabis have varying effects, thanks to each strain’s unique genetic makeup of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids (chemotype).
  • Calculate Your Dosages and Potency. Thankfully, a little bit of bud goes a long way. The fats in your base ingredient (more on that later) can only bind with so many cannabinoids.
  • Decarboxylate Your Cannabis. When making edibles, it’s not as easy as tossing your bud into a recipe and calling it a day. To activate your cannabis, you need to decarboxylate it–heat it–to transform the THCA in the plant to THC, the CBDA into CBD, and so on.
  • Don’t Overchop Your Weed. Once your weed’s decarbed, it’s time to infuse your carrier ingredient of choice. Many edible recipes online tell you to grind your weed ultra-fine to infuse your butter or oil better.
  • Select Your Infused Ingredient. You may opt for either cannabutter or infused oil, depending on your recipe. Making each kind of infused ingredient is roughly the same, so it’s really up to your taste preferences and what kind of recipes you’d like to make.

  • Premium Cannabutter. Making cannabutter is a time-honored way of infusing cannabis into food, since so many recipes include butter as an ingredient. But not all cannabutters are created equal.
  • Cannabis-Infused Tea with Rose and Lavender. Easily infuse the benefits of cannabis into foods by making a homemade tincture. When stored in the fridge, the tincture will keep almost indefinitely, ready to be stirred into your favorite food before serving.
  • Cannabis-Infused Citrus-Caramel Blondies. Cannabutter, orange zest, and caramel all go into these show-stopping blondies. The recipe is a modified version of one developed by Sarah Simmons, swapping cannabutter in for unsalted butter.
  • Cannabis-Infused Olive Oil. After decarbing, you'll gently infuse the cannabis in olive oil, creating an aromatic ingredient you'll be able to use in both sweet and savory recipes, from aglio e olio pasta to chocolate pretzel cookies and a citrus-infused cake.
  • Cannabis-Infused Pasta with Clams and Green Chiles. This dish is a modified version of a recipe developed by Andrew Brochu, swapping in cannabutter for some of the unsalted butter originally called for.
