Buttery, rich and perfectly sweet, this easy to make Caramel Frosting Buttercream is perfect for cupcakes, layer cakes or midnight treats!

1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
pinch of salt
3 cups confectioner's sugar
1 tbsp heavy cream
1 tbsp caramel (It should be thick. For store bought, I use Mrs. Richardsons)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In your stand mixer, add butter and salt at medium low speed.
  • Next turn your mixer to down to low and slowly add confectioner's sugar in small portions until all is added then turn the speed to medium high to combine.
  • Add heavy cream, caramel, and vanilla extract and mix until nice and fluffy.
  • Pipe or spread buttercream and serve.

This frosting is amazing and a great one for, say, a tasty banana cake or even a Devil's Food cake. Rich and super satisfying. The recipe is based on one I found on another site.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, melt butter and add brown sugar. Bring this mixture to a boil, stirring frequently. Boil and stir for 1 minute until thickened. Remove from heat and add milk. Beat with wire whisk until smooth. Add vanilla and beat again. Then add enough powdered sugar until of desired spreading consistency; the frosting should be POURABLE. POUR frosting over cake from pan and spread to cover. Frosting cools VERY QUICKLY.

  • Refrigerate after frosting for best texture.

4 sticks (2 cups) unsalted butter, at room temperature
8 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1/2 cup salted caramel sauce
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup heavy cream

Steps:

  • Beat the butter with a mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 2 minutes. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the confectioners' sugar 1 cup at a time. Then mix in the caramel, vanilla and salt. Mix in the cream to loosen the frosting.

Got this recipe from my grandmother. It can be alittle tricky to make if you don't pay attention to the temp. but, it's great.

3 cups sugar, divided
3/4 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup butter, cut up

Steps:

  • Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar in a heavy saucepan; place over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until sugar melts and syrup is light golden brown.The sugar will start to clump, this is normal, just keep stirring.
  • Combine reamaining 2 1/2 cups sugar, milk, beaten egg, and salt, stirring well, stir in the butter. Stir mixture into carmelized sugar, the mixture will lump again, just keep stirring.
  • Cook over medium heat stirring frequently, until a candy thermometer registers at 230F, this takes about 15-20 minutes, but don't rely on the time! Check the thermometer!)Cool mixture 5 minutes.
  • Beat mixture with a WOODEN spoon to almost spreading consistency. The mixture will cool and thicken quickly at this point. Spread on a cooled cake.

2/3 cup water
5 eggs
1 lb butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons dark rum (or 4 Tbsp rum extract)

Steps:

  • Combine brown sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Continue to boil until sugar has reached soft-ball stage (235-240F).
  • Meanwhile, place egg whites into a clean, stainless-steel mixer bowl and with the whip atachment, beat on low speed until foamy. Raise the speed to medium high and whip until stiff, but not dry.
  • While the mixer is running, add your brown sugar syrup slowly into the beaten egg whites in a steady stream. continue beating on high speed until the mixture has cooled down--about 3 minutes.
  • Add the softened butter 1 tablespoons at a time with the mixer running. Add vanilla and rum. Keep beating the buttercream until it is smooth and creamy.
  • Please Note: After you add the soft butter, the buttercream is going to "break" meaning it will look curdled and runny. Don't worry! Keep on whipping and it will come together!.

I love this stuff! I also really love that it's quick and easy to make. You don't have to cook the caramel cause you use ice cream topping caramel for this! The recipe came directly from Wilton's website. You can make it soft and spreadable or as stiff as you need by adjusting the amount of milk you add. Just follow the directions and it'll come out perfect every time.

1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup caramel ice cream topping
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted (1lb box)

Steps:

  • Cream shortening and butter with electric mixer. Add ice cream topping, milk and vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.
  • Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until ready to use. For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Re-whip before using.

1/2 cup water

1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons Baileys caramel irish cream

Steps:

  • Using a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whip the eggs and yolks in a large bowl on high speed for about 5 minutes.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the water and sugar; simmer until it reaches the soft ball stage, registering between 234 and 240F on a candy thermometer.
  • Immediately transfer the syrup to a large heatproof liquid measuring cup. In a slow, thin stream, add the sugar mixture to the egg mixture., mixing on low speed the entire time.
  • Increase the speed to medium and beat about 7 minutes, until the syrup has cooled. Add the butter, half a stick at a time, beating on medium after each addition.
  • Once all of the butter has been added, beat on medium speed until the frosting thickens slightly, about 3 minutes. Stir in the salt and Irish Cream.
