  • A sound like a coin in a clothes dryer. What it means: If you hear something rattling around inside a wheel at low speeds (and then stops as you drive faster) it could be a loose lug nut inside a hub cap.
  • Brakes squealing, grinding or growling. What it means: If you hear a squealing noise, your brake pads or shoes might be nearing the end of their service life and must be replaced.
  • A finger-snapping, popping or clicking sound when you turn. What it means: If you have a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive vehicle and hear this sound when you turn or corner (but the noise stops when you steer straight) one or both of the constant velocity (CV) joints on your front axle could need replacing.
  • A rhythmic squeak that speeds up as you accelerate. What it means: If you have rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and hear this sound, the culprit could be the universal joint (U-joint), which are found in pairs and are components of the driveshaft.
  • A howling, whining or even “singing” What it means: This is usually a sign that your bearings—tiny metal balls that help parts rotate smoothly—aren’t doing their job.
  • Rhythmic clunking, tapping or banging from under the hood. What it means: There could be a serious problem with valves, connecting rods or pistons. Get to a mechanic ASAP.
  • Squealing under the hood at start-up or when accelerating. What it means: This could come from worn or loose accessory belts that drive things like your power steering pump, air conditioner compressor and alternator.

  • Rattling sound at low speeds. Diagnosis: Loosened Lug Nut. If you hear a rattling sound when you start to drive and it goes away with the speeds, it can possibly be because of a loose or misaligned lug nut inside a hub cap.
  • Brake Squeal. Diagnosis: Worn-out Brake Pad. Another one among common car noises is the squealing sound from the brakes. I am sure most of you have experienced this sound.
  • Clicking Sound While Turning. Diagnosis: Failing CV Joints (Constant Velocity) Life doesn’t always let you drive straight! Experiencing noises while turning your car can also be a sign of danger.
  • Squealing under the hood. Diagnosis: Worn-out Serpentine Belt. If you hear squealing sounds from under the hood when you start the car, this can be due to a worn-out serpentine belt.
  • Rumbling Sound From the Exhaust. Diagnosis: Cracked Exhaust Muffler. If you hear a rumbling sound from the rear compartment while you drive, it can be because of a small peel or leak in the exhaust muffler.
  • Squeal While Turning. Diagnosis: Low Power Steering Fluid. If you are turning your car’s steering and hear squealing noises, you are definitely low on power steering fluid.
  • Groaning Yawn while Turning. Diagnosis: Failing Power Steering Assembly. Another issue that you can feel with the steering is a groaning yawn like noise while you make a turn.
  • Grinding while shifting gears. Diagnosis: Worn-out Clutch. Another one among the common car noises faced by our customers is the grinding noise while they shift gears.
  • Knocking the engine compartment. Diagnosis: Engine Compression Issues. Knocking is a common phenomenon which can occur in engines due to the incomplete combustion of fuel.
  • Popping noise in the engine. Diagnosis: Worn-out Spark Plugs and/or clogged fuel filter. If you hear popping sounds from your car’s engine, your car is most probably telling you that it needs to be serviced.
