  • The Bourbon Sour. It won’t come as a surprise to hear that a classic whiskey or bourbon sour recipe includes plenty of lemon juice. That said, there is sugar in the mix, too, to keep this from being out of balance.
  • Whiskey Smash. This cocktail is like a cross between a whiskey sour and a mint julep. It gets the name from the fact that you need to muddle or smash the mint with sugar and lemon.
  • Best Bourbon Old-Fashioned. The old-fashioned can be traced way back to 1806 and is one of the very first recorded definitions of the cocktail. Traditionally made with sugar, bitters, water, and a decent glug of bourbon or whiskey, it’s the kind of drink you take your time to make and then sip, rather than devour in one mouthful.
  • Classic Bourbon Manhattan Cocktail. The Manhattan is a straightforward cocktail made using three ingredients and a lot of love. It’s intense, rich, and full of bourbon flavor.
  • The Revolver Cocktail. This cocktail was created in San Francisco by a bartender with a few too many bottles of Bulleit bourbon. Since it was an unknown brand, he wanted to create something new to help it sell.
  • Mint Julep. Did you know that the mint julep is the drink of the Kentucky Derby and that over 120,000 cocktails are served over that one weekend each year?
  • Classic Hot Toddy. As the weather gets colder, the last thing I want at night is a glass full of ice. Even with warm alcohol, like bourbon, it’s just too cold to enjoy.
  • Ginger Rabbit. Other than the inclusion of ginger, I could not find out why this is called a ginger rabbit. Any ideas? This cocktail is surprisingly complex, and it’s so much more than just ginger, lemon, and bourbon.
  • Black Demure. There’s nothing demure about this bourbon cocktail. Instead, the name refers to the use of Crème de mûre, a vibrant blackberry liqueur.
  • Bourbon Sidecar. Traditional sidecars are made with Cognac and citrus. They’re sweet, and tart and are known to be a lighter version of the whiskey sour.

24 BEST BOURBON COCKTAILS - THE SPRUCE EATS

Occupation Cocktail Book Author And Mixologist
Published 2018-08-28
  • Old-Fashioned. Simple and fascinating, few cocktails can beat the old-fashioned. The recipe is unbelievably easy, accenting bourbon with sugar and bitters, as well as orange and soda if you like.
  • Mint Julep. Though it's a must for the Kentucky Derby, the popular mint julep is a fabulous choice year-round. The mint acts as a cooling contrast to a smooth, bold whiskey, and the sugar brings the two together wonderfully.
  • Manhattan. There are no great secrets to the success of the Manhattan, whiskey's answer to the gin martini. While you can make it with any style of whiskey, bourbon is the choice for many drinkers.
  • John Collins. Many whiskey cocktails can use any style of the brown liquor, but bourbon is often a favorite. That's certainly the case for the John Collins, one of the best tall drinks you can mix up.
  • Whiskey Smash. For a taste of a very old whiskey cocktail, try the whiskey smash. This storied drink has been around since the late 1800s, and it's just as satisfying today.
  • Perfect Manhattan. Like the martini, you can also make your Manhattan "perfect." That simply means you'll pour equal amounts of both sweet and dry vermouth.
  • Bourbon Sidecar. The sidecar is often associated with brandy, but it's intriguing when you switch to bourbon. The bourbon sidecar is a basic sour cocktail that shakes the whiskey with orange-flavored triple sec and lemon juice.
  • Bourbon Eggnog. You might get a craving for boozy eggnog around the holidays, and bourbon is an excellent choice for the traditional drink. This particular recipe makes enough for an intimate party and your guests will love the made-from-scratch flavor.
  • Kentucky Coffee. Whiskey and coffee were made for one another. In the Kentucky coffee, the duo is enhanced with a whiskey-based honey liqueur, offering a sweet touch with a little more booze.
  • Bourbon Tea. Bourbon and sweet tea are Southern staples, so it's only natural that they make a fabulous match. This bourbon tea recipe takes a unique approach to the sweetener, calling for lemon liquor rather than sugar and lemon.

THE 8 BEST BOURBONS TO DRINK IN 2022

From thespruceeats.com
Author Nicholas Mcclelland
Published 2020-06-04
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
  • Best for Sipping: Baker's Kentucky Straight Bourbon. ABV: 107 proof | Age: 7 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. The folks at Jim Beam recently re-imagined the Baker’s label as a single barrel offering, and while the original 107 proof was excellent, the new version is simply fabulous.
  • Best Cheap: Four Roses Bourbon. ABV: 80 proof | Age: 5 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. Whether you can’t or just don’t want to spend a lot on bourbon, but still prefer not to drink “rotgut” whiskey, Four Roses Bourbon is a sure-fire winner.
  • Best American Bourbon: FEW Bourbon. ABV: 93 proof | Age: No Age Statement | Volume: 750 milliliters. It’s a common misconception, but it does not have to be made in Kentucky to be called bourbon.
  • Best Kentucky Bourbon: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Kentucky Straight Bourbon. ABV: 90.4 proof | Age: No Age Statement | Volume: 750 milliliters. The aging process is how bourbon is imbued with much of its flavor, and by definition, bourbon must be aged in new charred American oak.
  • Best for Old Fashioneds: Knob Creek 9 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon. ABV: 100 proof | Age: 9 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. In the early '90s, legendary Jim Beam master distiller Booker Noe created and introduced Knob Creek, one of the first “small batch” bourbons to make it to market.
  • Best for Beginners: Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon. ABV: 90 proof | Age: At least 8 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. Every drinker is different. So why one falls in love with a particular spirit is a unique and individual experience.
  • Best High Proof: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. ABV: 128 to 140 proof| Age: 12 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. If you’re the kind of whiskey drinker who wants to feel a glass not just on the taste buds but deep in the liver, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is your called shot.
  • Best Top Shelf: Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon. ABV: 94.4 proof | Age: 10 years | Volume: 750 milliliters. There are quite a few “top-shelf” bourbons that are incredibly hard to find and not worth the seven figures over the retail price that collectors are shelling out for them.

  • Bourbon Sour. The bourbon sour is made with simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen and it’s one of the best bourbon recipes.

  • Boulevardier Cocktail. When you’re looking for a high-class drink you can make right at home, try this Boulevardier cocktail. Bold and flavorful, this is a great drink to sip by the fire or just take an evening stroll with friends.
  • Whiskey Highball. The highball is one of the simplest bourbon cocktails you could possibly make. All you need is bourbon, soda water, and some ice cubes.
  • New York Sour. A sour basically means that you add lemon ingredients to a whiskey base. In this recipe, bourbon and fresh lemon juice go together well as they balance each other out.
  • Classic Old Fashioned. You can’t deny the delicious taste of bourbon and the old fashioned is a great drink to make with it. The recipe calls for bourbon as well as some other ingredients like bitters, sugar, and an orange peel.
  • Kentucky Mule. You can make a Kentucky mule by using ginger beer instead of regular. The drink also uses fresh lime juice, bourbon, and simple syrup to bring together the three flavors.
  • Bourbon Manhattan. A Manhattan is generally made with rye whiskey but adding in some bourbon gives it another level of flavor. This is another great drink to make that takes advantage of the fall season because it has a nice spicy profile to it thanks to the cloves and cinnamon syrup.
  • Bourbon Sidecar. This drink was made to sip because of the way you serve it in a coupe glass. However, it is packed with flavor and uses bourbon, triple sec, lemon juice, sugar syrup, and an orange peel to make one great drink.

7 BEST WHISKEYS FOR A MANHATTAN (FROM A MIXOLOGIST)

From bourboninspector.com
  • Pikesville Rye (or Rittenhouse Rye) One of the best rye whiskies for a Manhattan is Pikesville Rye made by Heaven Hill Distillery in Kentucky. It packs a hefty punch at 110 proof.
  • Wilderness Trail Bourbon. Made in Danville, Kentucky, Wilderness Trail distills delicious bourbon and rye whiskeys. Using their Small Batch Bottled in Bond Bourbon or their Single Barrel Bourbon is the most economical at $45 or $50 respectively.
  • Woodford Double Oaked Bourbon. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked bourbon has the extra flavors from a secondary finishing in a barrel toasted for 40 minutes and charred for 5 seconds – a much longer toasting than the initial Woodford Reserve barrel.
  • Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon. Many find the basic Maker’s Mark expression too subtle and soft to stand up to assertive sweet vermouth in a cocktail. But the extra aging and proof on Maker’s 46 is another story altogether.
  • Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon. Both Elijah Craig bourbon expressions, the small batch and the barrel proof, are excellent in a Manhattan. For people who prefer a higher proof, the barrel-proof expression makes a high-end Manhattan that you’ll want to keep sipping all night.
  • Willett Family Estate Rye. Willett Family Estate Rye has a very distinctive flavor profile, with lots of rye spice, cinnamon, and mint/herbal notes. If you enjoy their rye neat, you want to try it in a Manhattan – if you can find it.
  • Russels’ Reserve Rye. This six-year-old Wild Turkey Russell’s Reserve Rye is about $35, and a bargain for the flavor. The flavor is full of oak, baking spices, and caramel – with some extra heat for your Manhattan cocktail.
