  • Aerate the Lawn. If your lawn’s soil is too compact, the new nutrients you’re adding won’t do too much good. You may need to aerate your lawn to get the benefits of the topsoil.
  • Mix Your Topsoil. If you didn’t buy premixed topsoil, or if you’d like to add something else to it to better your soil, you need to mix it up to start.
  • Apply Topsoil. Thinly sprinkle the topsoil over the areas you’d like to treat. If there is an area where you want to build up the soil much higher than it is now, you’ll need to remove the sod first.
  • Add Grass Seed. For areas where you needed to remove the sod, or spots where the grass is looking a little thin, add some grass seed. Be sure that the seed is the same species of grass that you have on your lawn now and the right kind for your climate.
  • Water Your Lawn. Whether you’ve added grass seed or not, it’s wise to water the lawn to help the soil stay in place and help any grass seed sprout. To support the new grass, you will want to water more frequently for the next few weeks.
