  • Fermented Foods. Whiteman says that sugar will be this year's "culinary satan." Because fermented foods like pickles, sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi taste sour, they are the psychological anecdote to sugar, and are likely to soar in popularity this year.
  • Savory Ice Creams, Gelatos, and Yogurts. White predicts that savory frozen concoctions are on deck in the dessert department. The same goes for regular yogurts: Manufacturers like Siggi's are already trending toward mixing fruit and vegetable flavors, like orange and ginger, and Chobani, the market leader, will likely be bringing similar combinations to supermarkets soon.
  • Increasingly Interesting Hummus Flavors. Hummus is getting further and further from its Middle Eastern roots — take Tribe's Harvest Carrot flavor, for instance, or its hummus flavored with everything bagel spices.
  • Pizzas With Unexpected Toppings. This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
  • Chipotle of [Insert Literally Any Cuisine Here] Because of the growing skepticism about factory-made, processed foods, people want to see the food they're going to eat before it's plated.
  • "Free Froms" "Gluten-free" was so 2014, while "no added sugar" and "all natural" seemed to take the cake in 2015. In 2016, the health-centric catch phrase you'll likely see everywhere is "free from" — free from additives, hormones, preservatives, and artificial ingredients.
  • Seaweed Popcorn. Because it's gluten-free and high in fiber (hello, ~health halo~), popcorn is the fastest growing snack in country, explains Whiteman — but the seaweed flavoring is a manifestation of a larger trend: Food manufacturers are doing anything and everything to make food appear Extra Healthy.
  • Jerky. "People are gravitating toward savory snacks rather than sweets," Whiteman explains. Enter jerky. The snack is high in protein and low in sugar, and it earns bonus points for its portability and intense flavoring.
  • Starbucks Soda. The increasing abandonment of big sodas and a growing interest in artisan sodas that are free of foreign ingredients has paved the way for Starbucks to branch out into carbonated beverages — they already offer ginger, orange cream, and lemon-flavored Fizzios at select locations.
