A delicious, hearty casserole that goes together in minutes with the help of Hamburger Helper!

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 box Hamburger Helper Double Cheeseburger Macaroni
1 pound lean ground beef
1 cup hot water
2 cups milk
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon garlic powder
14.5 ounce can petite diced tomatoes, drained
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
6 ounce container French Fried onions
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Brown beef and chopped onion in a skillet; then drain
  • Sprinkle the beef with the garlic powder, pepper and Italian seasoning and mix in well
  • Stir in the hot water, milk, sauce mix and pasta; heat to boiling
  • Reduce heat and add the diced tomatoes and brown sugar; cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until pasta is tender.
  • Add half of the French fried onions to the mixture and 1/2 cup of the cheese
  • Transfer to a 9×11 inch baking dish
  • Sprinkle on the remaining cheese and top with the remaining French fried onions
  • Broil on low for 2-4 minutes or until cheese is melted and French fried onions are crispy and golden

1/3 cup instant onion
3 tablespoons onion powder or 3 tablespoons granulated onion
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 2/3 cups nonfat dry milk powder
3 1/2 tablespoons beef bouillon granules
1 lb ground beef or 1 lb ground turkey
1 cup water
1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni
1 (16 ounce) can diced tomatoes or 1 (16 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 lb ground beef or 1 lb ground turkey

Steps:

  • Combine seasoning mix ingredients. Store in an airtight container. Shake well before using.
  • Cheeseburger Casserole: Brown meat in 12" skillet over medium-high heat. Drain fat and discard. Add water, macaroni, tomatoes and 1/2 cup of seasoning mix. Simmer, covered, 20 minutes or until macaroni is tender. Off heat, stir in parmesan cheese and serve.
  • Chili Tomato Macaroni: Brown meat in 12" skillet over medium-high heat. Drain fat and discard. Add water, macaroni, tomatoes, chili powder and 1/2 cup of seasoning mix. Simmer, covered, 20 minutes or until macaroni is tender. Serve hot.
  • Potato Casserole: Brown meat in 12" skillet over medium-high heat. Drain fat and discard. Add water, potatoes, and 2/3 cup of seasoning mix. Simmer, covered, 20-30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Stir. Cook uncovered until excess water is evaporated and sauce is nice and thick. Serve hot.

We like Hamburger Helper but we don't like the MSG or other icky ingredients! You can prepare "sauce packets" ahead of time to save time. Increase/alter seasonings and/or cheese to suit your tastes!

1 lb 92% lean ground beef (or your preferred type)
1 cup hot water
2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
1 cup cheddar cheese (shredded, plus more for topping, if desired)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef in a large skillet. Drain.
  • Add hot water, milk, pasta and "sauce packet" ingredients.
  • Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer 12 minutes or until pasta is tender.
  • In the last few minutes of cook time, add cheese, stir and re-cover.
  • When pasta is tender and cheese is melted, remove heat and uncover.
  • Let stand about 5 minutes. Sauce will thicken as it stands.
  • Top with additional cheese if you like.
