Perfectly toasted, soft rolls are filled with tender ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, a homemade special sauce and all your favorite toppings to make this cheeseburger sub recipe. Whether you serve these burger-inspired sub sandwiches at a watch party, tailgate or just a casual gathering, everyone is sure to love them.

¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon sweet relish
1 garlic clove (minced or grated)
½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar
¼ teaspoon paprika
⅛ teaspoon onion powder
Few dashes of hot sauce
Few dashes of Worcestershire sauce
Salt to taste
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon paprika
2 garlic cloves (minced or grated)
4 6-inch sub rolls
1 cup freshly grated cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon melted butter
Additional desired toppings (optional)

Steps:

  • To make the special sauce, add the mayonnaise to a small bowl and stir in the remaining ingredients. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can do this up to a week in advance.
  • To make the cheeseburger subs, in a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil. Once the oil warms, add the ground beef and sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika. Cook the beef, using a wooden spoon to break up the meat during the cooking process. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, constantly stirring. Turn off the heat and drain the beef.
  • Divide the beef among four sub rolls. Top each with 1/4 cup shredded cheddar. Place in the broiler until the cheese melts. This should only take about a minute, so keep a close eye to make sure the bread doesn't burn. Remove from the broiler and dress with special sauce and desired toppings. Lightly brush the sub rolls with melted butter. Enjoy!

1/2 onion, finely chopped
1 1/4 pounds ground beef, broken into pieces

4 soft white hero rolls, split and toasted

Steps:

  • Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil, then add the onion, ground beef, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Cook, undisturbed, until the beef starts to develop a crust, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip with a spatula, breaking up the meat. Continue cooking until browned, about 30 more seconds. Stir in the pickled peppers, then arrange the cheese over the meat mixture; remove from the heat and let melt.
  • Spread the mayonnaise on both sides of the rolls. Divide the beef among the roll bottoms using a spatula. Top with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, hot sauce and the roll tops. Serve with potato chips.

1 package (11 ounces) refrigerated French bread dough
4 slices reduced-fat American cheese, divided
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cloves minced garlic
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tsp yellow mustard
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup thinly sliced iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350. Place bread dough on cutting board, stretch slightly. Cut dough into four equal portions. Cut three diagonal slits on top of each portion of dough; place seam side down and 3 inches apart on cookie sheet. Bake 20-22 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove loaves from baking sheet to a cooling rack. Cut two slices of the cheese into small pieces. In a 10-inch skillet, cook and stir beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking beef into crumbles. Drain. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Salt and Pepper, and cut-up cheese; stir until cheese is melted. Remove skillet from heat. Slice each loaf lengthwise, end to end, cutting halfway through to center of loaf; spread open. Fill evenly with beef mixture; place on baking stone. Bake 6-8 minutes or until bread is toasted and meat mixture is heated through; remove from oven. Cut remaining cheese slices diagonally in half; top each sandwich with one cheese traingle. Top sandwiches with lettuce.

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
3 slices process cheese (Velveeta)
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 loaf (1 pound) French bread or Italian bread
Additional process cheese (Velveeta) slices, optional
1 medium green pepper, thinly sliced
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in tomato sauce, cheese, onion, bouillon and garlic powder. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until bouillon is dissolved and cheese is melted. Cut the bread in half widthwise and lengthwise. Carefully hollow out top and bottom of loaf, leaving a 1/2-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Spoon meat mixture into bottom halves of bread. Top with additional cheese if desired, green pepper and tomato. Replace bread tops. Wrap in heavy-duty foil. Bake at 400° for 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Slice and serve warm.

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1/4 cup onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 medium tomatoes, sliced
8 slices cheddar cheese
8 slices bacon, cooked and halved
8 hoagie rolls, split and toasted

Steps:

  • In large bowl, combine the egg, tomato sauce, oats, onion, salt and pepper.
  • Crumble beef over mixture and mix well.
  • Press evenly into an ungreased 13-inch by 9-inch by 2-inch baking dish.
  • Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 30-35 minutes or until no pink remains and a meat thermometer reads 160°F; drain.
  • Combine mayonnaise and ketchup; spread over meatloaf.
  • Cut into eight rectangles; top each with tomatoes, cheese and bacon.
  • Place on baking sheet; broil 3-4 minutes from the heat for 2-3 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • Serve on buns.
